About the course

New Norfolk Golf Club is on Howell Drive in New Norfolk, in the Derwent Valley a short drive from Hobart, with views over the town and the Derwent River. The club's golf dates from 1912, when butcher F. H. Sherrin allowed play on his land at Kensington Park. It moved to the Warner family's Valleyfield property, now Oakdale, in 1923, where a hop pickers' hut served as the clubhouse, and to Millbrook Rise in 1936, where a lack of summer water limited play to April to October. The club then took up the present Howell Drive site: the clubhouse was under construction by March 1950 and water reached the 6th green that October.

The course is a nine-hole, 18-tee layout with tree-lined fairways, bunkers, doglegs and changes in elevation. Holes to note:

  • 1st: a 444-metre par 5 with out of bounds along the whole left side.
  • 5th: a 298-metre par 4 with views over the township from the tee and a deep bunker front right.
  • 7th: a 415-metre par 4 with a blind tee shot and the club dam beside the green.
  • 9th: the longest hole, a 455-metre par 5 dogleg with a sloping fairway and a fast green.

The club offers green fee access for casual players as well as membership, and runs regular competitions, social events and coaching. Its published green fee table dates from December 2022, so check current fees with the club before visiting. Golf carts are hired to members only.

The clubhouse has a licensed bar, light snacks, a dining area that can be hired for functions, and an outdoor deck looking over the course.
