About the course
Tea Tree Golf Club was founded on 5 April 1929 at a meeting at Willowbrook, the Brighton home of Alex Scott, and has operated ever since. Its first links were on land leased from the Thompson family of Summerville for a shilling a year, pegged out by Robert Nettlefold, Kingston Beach professional Jock Robertson and Tasmanian ladies' champion Betty Sale. When the lease ended in 1978 the club bought about 30 hectares behind the Pontville township, and the present course and clubhouse were officially opened in 1982.
The course on Volcanic Drive, about 30 minutes' drive north of Hobart, has nine holes played twice for a par of 69. It sits in semi-rural country among light timber, with one prominent hill and a creek through the middle that must be carried on some holes and runs alongside others. Fairways and greens are fescue, and the small greens call for accurate approaches.
- 6th: a par 4 with the creek running down the left.
- 10th: a par 3 of about 200 metres, rated the hardest hole on the course.
Tea Tree is a private club that opens to the public on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, outside competition times. The green fee is the same for nine or 18 holes: $20 for adults and $10 for under 16s. On Tuesdays the course is closed until 2pm for a competition that members of other clubs may enter, Wednesday is the ladies' competition, and on Saturdays the course is closed until 3pm. During daylight saving a nine-hole twilight event open to visitors tees off from 3pm on Thursdays. Most Sundays are open to the public, apart from occasional inter-club matches and special events.
The clubhouse has a bar, but the club does not offer extensive practice facilities.
