About the course

Huon Valley Golf Club sits beside the Huon River on Golf Course Road, a few minutes' drive from Huonville in Tasmania's south. Golf in the district began in 1932 on a property at Grove, and the club joined the Southern Tasmanian Golf Union a year later. It moved to Ranelagh in 1940 and to land behind the town in 1945, playing only part of each year, before settling on the present site in 1969 and taking its current name. The club credits the design to a Mr Howard, who also laid out the Tasmania Golf Club course. It began with nine holes and grew to 12 through volunteer labour, and volunteers still maintain the course.

The 12-hole parkland layout is played as 18: holes 1 to 6 are replayed from alternate tees as the 10th to 15th, while the 7th, 8th and 9th and the 16th, 17th and 18th are stand-alone holes. The card adds up to par 72 and about 5,719 metres. Greens are mostly small and raised, fairways are tree-lined, and a breeze often blows down the valley.

2nd: a 489-metre par 5 with out of bounds right and a valley across the fairway that can leave a blind third.
9th: a 452-metre double dogleg par 5, one of the club's signature holes.
11th: the hardest hole, a 392-metre par 4 sharing the 2nd's fairway and green, often into the wind.

Visitors are welcome. Bookings are needed only on competition days (Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday) or for groups. The daily green fee is $40 however many holes you play, or $10 for juniors under 16, and on competition days it covers comp entry when you play with a member. Visitors fill in the receipt book and pay before teeing off. The clubhouse bar usually opens on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, and can open for groups of 20 or more on request.
