About the course
Port Sorell Golf Club's course lies at Shearwater, roughly 200 metres from Freers Beach and next to the Shearwater Resort. The links were laid out by Devonport orchardist Kelly Wilson and an associate, built by locals Col Richards and Jim Dick, and started as six holes. The Shearwater Golf Club formed here in the late 1950s, but in 1980 most of its members left to build a new course at Thirlstane. Those who stayed called a public meeting on 30 September 1980, formed the Port Sorell Golf Club and held their first competition on 4 October. The current clubhouse, built for the club by the resort, opened in June 1988.
The nine holes are played twice for a men's par of 70. The first six are on sandy ground and play as links holes, while the last three, further from the beach, have a different character. Deep bunkers guard most greens, and the greens are usually quick with subtle borrows, which the wind makes harder to read.
- 2nd: a 435-metre par 5 for men (par 4 for women).
- 6th: the shortest hole, a 124-metre par 3.
- 8th: the longest hole, a 459-metre par 5.
Visitors can play socially or join competitions; ring the pro shop on (03) 6428 6555 for times. Green fees are $25 a day, $15 after 4pm and $10 for juniors. Non-members hire carts for $30 (nine) or $40 (18). Thongs and sleeveless shirts are not allowed on the course or in the clubhouse. Tuesday is veterans' day, Wednesday has a nine-hole chicken run and barbecue, Thursday is women's competition, Friday has a nine-hole chicken run and an 18-hole visitors' stableford, and Saturday is the men's and women's competition.
The pro shop is run by club professional Darren Spencer, who played the Australasian Tour from 1987 to 1990, has been at the club since 1993 and gives lessons.
