About the course

Thirlstane Golf Club is on Squeaking Point Road, in farmland surrounded by bush about 18 kilometres east of Devonport and about 7 kilometres from Port Sorell. The club began in 1980, when most members of the Shearwater Golf Club at Port Sorell bought land at Thirlstane, commissioned Hobart golfer Peter Toogood to design a course, and played a temporary six-hole layout while the nine holes were built. It took the Thirlstane name in the 1990s.

The nine holes are played twice for a par of 72. Fairways are flat, and four holes have alternate tees for the second nine.

  • 3rd/12th: a 476-metre par 5, a dogleg left from the 3rd tee and a double dogleg from the 12th.
  • 6th/15th: the signature hole, a short par 3 of about 131 metres with the green set between two lakes and two bunkers.
  • 9th/18th: a par 4 to an elevated, sloping green; from the 9th tee it doglegs left and is the hardest hole on the course.

Thirlstane is not a public course, but it welcomes visitors who follow golf etiquette. Fees are $30 a day, $60 a week, $20 after 3pm (4pm in daylight saving), $20 for nine holes at any time and $10 for juniors. Groups are limited to four, and tank tops are not allowed. The two electric carts cost $25 a round; book 24 hours ahead. Monday and Thursday are maintenance days, Tuesday is women's competition (social play from about 1:30pm), Wednesday is veterans' and midweek competition (from 3pm), and Saturday is members' competition (from 3pm). A nine-hole chicken run fills Friday and a ball competition runs on Sunday, with social players welcome on both. Visitors with a GA handicap can enter competitions for $10 plus the competition fee.

Facilities include a putting green, chipping area, two driving nets, a driving range and a licensed clubhouse. The bar opens Wednesday, Friday and Saturday afternoons and Sunday from 11am to 4pm. Self-contained RVs can stay beside the course for $15 a night.
