About the course
Golf has been played at Mount Macedon since the early 1920s, when the course belonged to a large guest house popular with Melburnians escaping the summer heat, and in the 1930s it hosted events on a small professional circuit. The course declined after World War II, until local golfers formed the Mt Macedon Golf Club in 1965 and 1966 and rebuilt the course and a clubhouse; the first club championship was held in 1973, and a 24-megalitre dam followed. On Ash Wednesday, 16 February 1983, fire destroyed the course, clubhouse, machinery and club records. Members led by Bernie Donovan rebuilt it, and it was ready for play by the end of December 1984. Volunteers have done most of the work on the course since.
The course has nine holes and eighteen tees, with many second-nine tees placed to change the angle or length of the hole. Played as 18, it is par 67.
- 1st: a 159-metre par 3 from an elevated tee across a valley and creek to a green set above the tee.
- 4th: a 349-metre par 4 (401 metres as the 13th) between bushland toward the mountain, often into the wind, with out of bounds long and right.
- 9th: a 421-metre uphill par 5 (a 353-metre par 4 as the 18th) that crosses the valley and creek to an elevated green.
Green fee players are welcome and rarely wait. Payment is on an honour system: put the correct money in an envelope, keep the receipt and drop the envelope in the green fees box before you play; spot checks are made. Fees are $30 for the day, $25 for nine holes and $15 a round for juniors aged 17 and under. The course is closed to green fee players on Wednesdays until noon and Saturdays until 2pm. Two self-serve carts can be pre-booked online, and a few sets of clubs and buggies can be hired when the clubhouse is staffed.
