About the course
Bannockburn Golf Club plays through gum trees on the Bannockburn Shelford Road, a short drive from Geelong. Golf in the town began around 1920 on a nine-hole layout beside Bruce's Creek, and in 1956 the club moved to leased farmland west of the township, where a 1969 bushfire destroyed its course and clubhouse. The present site was leased in 1968 and laid out by Geelong golfer Max Kroger: the first nine opened in April 1971 and the second in November 1972.
For most of its history Bannockburn played on sand scrapes. An anonymous local donor offered $1 million towards grass greens, and after a 21-month project designed by Paul Reeves of Pacific Coast Design the course now has 19 couch (Winter Green) greens built to USGA specification, averaging about 400 square metres against the old 100. The routing was also revised, with the 8th becoming a par 4, the 10th a par 5 and the 11th a par 3. Fairways are Santa Ana couch.
- 1st: a downhill 140-metre par 3 through a narrow chute of eucalypts, to a green shaped like the koala in the club's logo.
- 6th: a 491-metre par 5, the first of only two on the course.
- 8th: a 304-metre par 4 that long hitters can drive to front pins, with the largest green on the course in three tiers.
Casual players are welcome seven days a week. Green fees are $35 for 18 holes and $25 for nine, paid by card at the kiosk, in cash through the green fee slot, or online when booking through TeeNet. Self-service VendiGolf carts cost $40 for 18 holes and $30 for nine and should be booked ahead. There is no formal dress code beyond neat clothing,.
Practice facilities include nets, a four-hole putting green, a short-iron practice tee and a driving tee near the 10th. A vending machine sells drinks, snacks and balls, the clubhouse bar opens on Saturdays from 11am to 4pm, and Geelong Golf Academy coaches on Wednesdays.
