About the course

Benalla Golf Club was formed on 19 June 1903 with 12 members and a nine-hole course in town that was played only in winter and grazed by sheep in summer. After several moves, including a spell on Caseys Island in the Broken River, the club bought its present 132-acre property on Mansfield Road in 1945, and volunteers cleared and built the course for its opening in 1949. Grass greens replaced the sand scrapes in 1961, the current clubhouse opened in 1990, and in 1956 Peter Thomson played an exhibition match here. The town is about two hours from Melbourne.

The 18-hole course was designed by W. Crowther, with Sam Berriman the architect for newer work. It is flat and walkable, set in bushland with Santa Ana fairways and grass greens, and has bunkers and water hazards; kangaroos are common. In 2021 volunteers rebuilt every bunker with new drainage and washed sand, and a new driving range was added later that year.

Green fees are $50 for 18 holes and $35 for nine, or $45 and $30 when booked online through the club's Teenet page. Juniors aged 14 to 17 pay $10 for nine and $15 for 18, and under 14s play free with an adult. Motorised carts are $50 for 18 holes and $25 for nine (bookings advised), club hire with bag and buggy is $18 and a push buggy is $4. Visitors with a GA handicap are welcome in competitions, and the men's Wednesday stableford is an open event.

The pro shop, run by Wayne and Lynda Hocking, sells equipment, does grip fitting and club repairs and sells range tokens; it opens seven days, 8am to 6pm in summer and 9am to 5pm in winter. The Benalla Bistro serves lunch daily from 12pm to 2pm and dinner, and the club was named 2026 Victorian Get Into Golf Venue of the Year.
