About the course
Jubilee Golf Club was formed in 1935 and until 1962 played on sand scrapes at a rented property on the Yarrawonga Road, as a winter course used from March to October. In 1962 members agreed to buy 149 acres beneath the Warby Range, and Dick Pendlebury, a local course builder and club maker, laid out the 18 holes. The course was opened on 27 April 1963, when Mac Holten hit the first ball, and its grass greens followed in 1967. The club is on Grandview Road, about 10 kilometres from Wangaratta in Kelly Country near Glenrowan, beside the Warby Ovens National Park.
The course is a par 72 of about 6,100 metres from the men's tees, with Santa Ana couch fairways and bent grass greens. Granite underneath means it can be played all year, and elevated tees look across the Ovens Valley to the Alps. Pendlebury named every hole.
- 8th, Lowanna: a 145-metre par 3 inspired by the Postage Stamp at Troon.
- 11th, Blackboy: a 503-metre par 5 along the range, lined with grass trees.
- 12th, Boomerang: a 393-metre dogleg left, rated the hardest hole.
- 17th, The Road: a 204-metre par 3 with out of bounds along the road.
Green fees are $45 for 18 holes and $30 for nine, with juniors $15, and members of reciprocal clubs pay half price for social golf. Visitors with an official handicap can enter 18-hole competitions for half the green fee plus a $13 competition fee. There are competitions on every day of the week: veterans on Monday (8am for an 8:30am shotgun), women on Tuesday and Thursday, men on Wednesday (plus a nine-hole event in daylight saving), and men and women from Friday to Sunday.
The pro shop is open seven days and hires carts at $44 for 18 holes and $22 for nine, and clubs with buggy for $20. There is a practice fairway with grass and synthetic tees, and the clubhouse holds about 150 people for functions.
