About the course

Box Hill Golf Club is a private club on Station Street, Box Hill South, about 16 kilometres from Melbourne's CBD. Its first annual meeting was held on 25 April 1913, on a nine-hole course south of Canterbury Road. Subdivision forced a move in 1924, and the club continued as Eastern Golf Club, some of whose members later founded Huntingdale. The Box Hill name returned in 1933, when J.P.C. Wellard built the Box Hill Public Golf Links on land that now holds much of the front nine. The club's social players bought half of that land in 1952, leased more from the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works in 1967 to complete 18 holes, and later bought all the leased land outright. New 15th and 16th holes then allowed the 13th, 14th, 17th and 18th to be reworked.

A marker near the 15th and 17th tees records that Tom Roberts, Frederick McCubbin and Louis Abrahams camped and painted beside Gardiners Creek in the summer of 1885 to 1886.

The tree-lined course is a par 71 of 5,618 metres, with a creek in play on several holes.

  • 4th: a 190-metre par 3 to a small green guarded by a large bunker.
  • 6th: a 152-metre par 3 over a creek to an elevated green, played towards the clubhouse.
  • 7th: a 480-metre par 5 that runs uphill to a small, well-bunkered green.
  • 18th: a 446-metre finishing hole with the creek winding down the right.

The club does not publish public green fees. Play is for members and their guests, and the club has reciprocal arrangements with a group of Victorian clubs and with country, interstate and overseas clubs; contact the club before planning a round. Traditional golf attire and soft-spike golf shoes are required, and denim is not allowed on the course.

The golf shop is open daily from 6:30am to 6pm, with three PGA professionals offering lessons from $70 for 30 minutes. The clubhouse has a members' lounge, two function rooms and Bistro@202Station, which is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, 12pm to 8pm.
