About the course
Riversdale Golf Club in Mount Waverley traces its start to 8 October 1892, when about a dozen players laid out a course on leased grazing land near Mont Albert railway station and formed the Surrey Hills Golf Club. The club says it is the second oldest in Melbourne, behind only Royal Melbourne. Housing pushed it to East Camberwell in 1907, when it took the Riversdale name, and in 1924 it bought the St John's Wood Estate at Burwood. The new course opened in May 1927, with around 3,500 trees planted during construction. When the Glen Waverley railway line cut through the property in 1930, Alex Russell redesigned the course, and its general layout has changed little since. The clubhouse was once Sir Redmond Barry's country estate and was largely rebuilt in 2010. The Riversdale Cup, an amateur event with roots in 1896, is the highlight of the club's year.
The course is a par 72 of 5,895 metres from the men's tees and a par 73 of 5,163 metres for women. It opens with a 198-metre par 3.
- 5th: a 380-metre par 4, the hardest hole on the men's card.
- 13th: the longest hole, a 507-metre par 5.
- 17th: a 187-metre par 3 late in the round.
Riversdale is a private club. Interstate and overseas visitors can book in advance through the office as unaccompanied guests for $180 per person, subject to availability, with a letter of introduction from their home club. A dress code applies on the course and practice areas.
The practice range is open to members and guests from 6am to 4.30pm, with baskets of 40 balls for $6 or 80 for $11 from the pro shop, and there is a short-game practice area. Members in competitions on Thursdays and Saturdays have priority on the range around midday.
