About the course
Freeway Golf Course is a public course at 47-49 Columba Street, Balwyn North, in Melbourne's east, run by GreenSpace Management in partnership with the City of Boroondara. The 18-hole course was built on the north side of the freeway in 1979, the same year the Camberwell Golf Club and the Camberwell Ladies Golf Club were formed there.
The course has been through an extensive renovation, with Pacific Coast Design guiding a redesign and rerouting of the holes through a parkland setting with distinctive bunkering. Alongside the construction work, the council commissioned a Vegetation Management Plan that sets out actions to 2033, including protecting native flora and fauna, creating wildlife corridors, installing nesting boxes and mowing less to build habitat.
Everyone is welcome seven days a week, with tee times from sunrise to sunset. Bookings open eight days ahead through the online system, and groups of eight or more book through the golf shop. Green fees are $42.50 for 18 holes and $32 for nine midweek, and $45.50 and $34 on weekends and public holidays; twilight golf after 5pm is $30. Students, seniors and pensioners with a valid card pay concession rates, except on public holidays. Club Car carts with GPS cost $54 for 18 holes on weekdays, and pull buggies, electric buggies and hire clubs are available.
Three resident clubs play here: Camberwell Golf Club, Camberwell Ladies Golf Club and the Harp Golf Club, a social club that plays on Sunday mornings. Club competitions run on Mondays (mixed), Wednesdays (women) and Thursdays and Saturdays (men).
The golf shop stocks equipment and apparel, and PGA professionals give individual lessons ($70 for 30 minutes), group clinics, MyGolf junior programs and club fitting on the practice fairway.
