About the course
Colac Golf Club is on the Colac-Lavers Hill Road at Colac, and its clubhouse looks out over Lake Colac and the surrounding volcanic lakes, craters and farmland. Golf in the district goes back to 1880, when some of the town's founders played on a rough nine-hole course east of Colac, with the greens fenced in barbed wire to keep grazing cattle off. The club's land was set aside in 1865 as a 145-acre racing and recreation reserve. The club was formally founded in 1896 and held its first annual open tournament in 1904. In 1928 it engaged Alex Russell, Alister MacKenzie's partner, to design its 18-hole course.
Green fee players are welcome. Fees are $44 for 18 holes and $34 for nine, and juniors pay $10 for either. Pay with the Tap N Go system before teeing off, as green fee inspectors may ask to see a receipt. Competitions run on Tuesday from 9am to 1pm and on Wednesday and Saturday from 8am to 1pm. Visitors may still get a game then, but booking with the pro shop is advised, and members of other clubs can play in competitions as guests. Carts are hired by appointment seven days a week for $42 for 18 holes or $32 for nine, and hire clubs are available. Dress is relaxed but tidy: collared shirts or neat T-shirts, golf shoes or sneakers with socks, and no singlets, thongs or footy shorts. BYO alcohol is not allowed on the course.
The pro shop stocks equipment and apparel and sells coffee, drinks and pies from a local bakery. The club has a driving range, and PGA professionals run group lessons for adults, women and juniors, MyGolf and Get Into Golf programs, and school holiday clinics.
