About the course
Winchelsea Golf Club was formed in 1933 on the site of the old Winchelsea Turf Club, a prominent racing club in the 1800s, and the racecourse grandstand became its first clubhouse. A small clubhouse built before the Second World War was staffed around the clock during the war as a Volunteer Air Observers Corps post. For its first 30 years the club played only from March to September; tree planting and watering have since made it a year-round course.
The nine holes were sand scrapes until grass greens were built in 1989, using topsoil that a storm had blown off a potato paddock onto the Winchelsea to Inverleigh road, and they were first played in March 1990. After drought restrictions killed six bent greens, every green was replaced with drought-tolerant Wintergreen couch, and a recycled water system and a dam now secure the water supply. Played twice from different tees, the course makes an 18-hole round of 5317 metres, par 67 for men and par 72 for women. The signature quarry hole is played blind over a screen of olive trees into the floor of a disused bluestone quarry. Older locals once called it the Aquarium, after the duck pond that sat in the quarry during the racecourse years.
Green fee players pay $25 for all-day golf, by card at the clubhouse. Book tee times through Book a Tee or the Golf Australia app. Competitions are held on Wednesday and Saturday, and guests with a Golf Australia handicap can play in them. Two two-seat electric carts can be hired through Vendi Golf. The club's open tournament, played for the Bert Coates Cup, runs over the last week and weekend of May.
