About the course
Golf at Drouin goes back to 1902, when the Drouin Golf Club was formed after the first holes were laid out near the railway station, and it registered with the state golf association a year later. One of its founders, Michael Scott, won the first Australian Open in 1904. The club closed during the Depression and again at the outbreak of the Second World War, and was revived in 1955 on just over 40 hectares of undulating Crown land shared with the race club, where members cleared scrub inside the racetrack and formed sand greens. Land bought in the 1980s allowed longer opening holes and a practice fairway, and the club history records nine more holes added in 2002.
The 18-hole course on McGlone Road, about 40 minutes up the Monash and Princes freeways from Melbourne's eastern suburbs, adds up to a par of 72 and 5,892 metres from the black tees. It mixes open, links-style holes with narrow tree-lined fairways on gently rolling ground, and water is in play on several holes.
- 1st: a 363-metre par 4 that doglegs right around a large water hazard.
- 13th: a 392-metre dogleg-left par 4, rated the hardest hole, with water and tall trees on the right.
- 16th: a 490-metre par 5 driven downhill to a narrow fairway.
The public can book seven days a week online or on (03) 5625 1330. Weekday green fees are $35 for 18 holes and $25 for nine, rising to $40 and $30 at weekends, and carts cost $50 for 18 holes and $30 for nine. Competitions restrict green-fee play to after 12pm on Wednesdays, after 1:45pm on Saturdays and set windows on Tuesday mornings.
The covered 10-bay driving range takes walk-ups, with visitor buckets from $14, and the putting green and chipping area are free to use. PGA coaches give lessons by appointment, and the club has a new clubhouse.
