About the course
Garfield Golf Club is a community club on Thirteen Mile Road in West Gippsland, a few minutes from Pakenham. It was formed in March 1929, with the first game played that June on a course in Mont Albert Road, and joined the West Gippsland Golf Association in 1934. The club moved to its present site in 1947 with nine holes, and in 1965, after buying more land, opened a new course designed by the professional George Naismith. Grass greens replaced the sand scrapes in 1968, a licensed clubhouse followed in 1981, and the full 18 holes opened on 6 April 1991 after more land was bought and irrigation and dams installed. From 1999 the fairways were returfed with Legend couch over six years, and the course has six par 3s.
Visitors are welcome most days and do not need a handicap, but every visitor round must be booked in advance, online or by phone, and green fees are paid when booking. Rates are $35 for 18 holes and $25 for nine on weekdays, and $40 and $30 on weekends and public holidays. Thursday and Saturday mornings have limited availability because of member competitions, which are also held on Wednesday and Sunday; visitors can enter selected events. The club has 18 electric carts, costing visitors $45 for 18 holes and $30 for nine, along with push carts and right, left-handed and junior club sets. Golf attire and enclosed shoes are required on course; denim, singlets, thongs and football shorts are not.
The pro shop inside the clubhouse stocks Titleist clubs and apparel, and there is a putting green for warming up. The clubhouse opens for meals on Thursday nights, the club runs twilight golf in summer, and it offers beginner programs, coaching and junior lessons.
