About the course
Eastern Sward Golf Club sits on the corner of Thompson and Worsley Roads at Bangholme, in Melbourne's south-east. It began as part of the social club of Melbourne Water's Eastern Treatment Plant in 1977, became incorporated in October 1990, and in 1995 left the social club and took a lease on the course from Melbourne Water. Membership grew from 90 to more than 300 in under two years and peaked at 420 in 2000.
The course is a flat nine-hole layout, sitting 4 to 6 metres above sea level and just under 5000 metres long over 18 holes, with alternate tees on every hole for the second nine. It is well treed, has four small lakes, and its small greens are lightly bunkered. Holes have been lengthened and greens improved over the years. Each nine is a par 34, with four par 3s and two par 5s.
- 2nd: a 459-metre par 5 with 240 metres needed to carry the water from the tee, so most players lay up; the front tee for the 11th tempts players to go for the carry.
- 7th: a dogleg that suits a left-to-right drive and is tighter from the back tee as the 16th; it is rated the hardest hole on the course.
- 8th: a 182-metre par 3 to a small green that slopes sharply from back to front, with bunkers on both sides.
Visitors book through the club's public booking system after registering as a public member; the club does not take bookings through GolfNow. Each player needs their own set of clubs, and carts or pull buggies can be hired when booking. Neat casual golf clothing is required, with no high-visibility clothing, work wear or work boots. Social clubs and corporate groups are welcome, and the clubhouse has a bar and barbecue area open to all.
