About the course
The National Golf Club is a private members' club at Cape Schanck on the Mornington Peninsula, with three 18-hole courses on The Cups Drive and a fourth, Long Island, at Frankston. David Inglis and Laurie Curtis bought the Cape Country Club land in 1984, and The National was launched in February 1985 as an equity shareholder club. Robert Trent Jones Jr's original course, now The Old, opened on 12 March 1988. The Moonah and Ocean courses opened in 2000 and the present clubhouse in 2002. The club merged with Long Island Country Club in 2014, Tom Doak redesigned the Ocean course as Gunnamatta, which opened at the end of 2019, and Long Island reopened in March 2026 after a redevelopment by Ogilvy Cocking Mead.
Each Cape Schanck course reflects its designer:
- The Old: Robert Trent Jones Jr's course on heaving terrain, with fairways crossing large dunes lined by tea tree, wide landing areas and undulating greens. It opened as a par 72 of 6,318 metres.
- Moonah: designed by Greg Norman with Bob Harrison and named after the old moonah trees on the property, with winding fairways, tall dunes and strong par 5s. It opened as a par 72 of 6,552 metres.
- Gunnamatta: Tom Doak's course beside Gunnamatta Beach, with generous fairways, natural bunkering and contoured greens.
Victorian residents who are not members can play only when invited by, and playing with, a member. Interstate and overseas visitors can request tee times through the club's online portal by choosing a course and date, and the club confirms by email. Green fees are charged per round, and guests may play up to 36 holes in a day. The dress code is enforced at the door.
The practice area, rebuilt in 2009, has open and undercover hitting bays, bunker and short-game areas and coaching facilities. The Cape Schanck pro shop is on (03) 5988 6777.
