About the course

The Kew Golf Club was founded in 1894 by solicitor James Anderson and architect Fred Fitts for residents of Kew and Hawthorn, and describes itself as Melbourne's third oldest golf club. Its first course, laid out by Richard Taylor, Australia's first golf professional, was on leased land about a kilometre south of the present site near the old Outer Circle Railway. Olympic champion Edwin Flack was an early member, and Kew was a foundation member of the Victorian Golf Association and the Victorian Ladies Golf Union.

After losing much of its land to housing in 1916, the club bought 92 acres on the Yarra River flats at Belford and Kilby Roads in 1922, where club professional Jock Robertson and Jock Young laid out a new course. Plans for the Eastern Freeway forced redesigns in the 1960s that took the course east across Glass Creek, and the present layout was complete by the early 1970s, with the clubhouse built in 1972.

The par 72 course runs along the Yarra about 15 minutes from the city, measuring 6,185 metres from the blue tees and 5,339 metres from the red, and more than 100 bird species live on it. The 4th is a 145-metre par 3 from the blue tees, surrounded by deep bunkers, and a new bridge on the hole opened in October 2024.

Kew is a private course for members and their guests. Interstate and overseas golfers are welcome on a limited number of days, but must present a letter of introduction and handicap confirmation from their home club, and should check availability with the golf shop or events team first. Members of reciprocal clubs are also welcome.

Members have a driving range beside the 10th, a short game area, and chipping and putting greens. Three PGA professionals in the pro shop offer coaching with TrackMan and video analysis, club fitting and repairs, and ride-on carts cost $50 a round.
