About the course
Latrobe Golf Club sits on the Yarra River flats at 8 Farm Road, Alphington, about 7 kilometres from Melbourne's CBD. The land was once part of the Lucerne estate, where Thomas Wills built a mansion in the 1840s, and the club takes its name from Charles La Trobe, who visited there. A nine-hole public course opened on part of the estate in 1938, and the club formally began in 1939 with five members. It reached 18 holes by 1951 and built a clubhouse in 1959, then completed a rebuild of the course in 1975 after freeway construction, flooding and drought. The clubhouse was refurbished in 2017.
The championship course is par 72 and measures 6062 metres. The Yarra wraps around two sides and five billabongs bring water into play; the ground is flat river country with subtle undulations, framed by river red gums. In 2020 the club added The Island, a five-hole par 3 course for beginners and relaxed social games. Latrobe hosts the WPGA Melbourne International, a women's professional event on the WPGA Tour of Australasia.
Latrobe is a members' club and does not publish public green fees online. Corporate golf days run on Mondays and Thursdays with tailored packages on either the championship course or The Island; enquiries go to events@latrobegolf.com.au, and general enquiries to (03) 9497 1000.
Practice facilities include a 180-metre driving range, three putting greens and an indoor golf simulator in the clubhouse. The pro shop is open daily from 6.30am to 6pm, and its three PGA professionals offer lessons, clinics, club fitting and repairs. The clubhouse has a spike bar for coffee before a round, function rooms overlooking the course and gardens, and lift access.
