About the course
Green Acres Golf Club is a private club at 51 Elm Grove in Kew East, about 15 minutes from the Melbourne CBD, on the banks of the Yarra River. The name was suggested in 1947 by G.B. Oliver, who came up with the idea of building a course on the site, expecting the river to keep it green. The Governor, Sir Dallas Brookes, hit the first shot in December 1950. The Yarra flooded parts of the course in the 1950s and 1960s, though upstream flood control has reduced this since.
The 18-hole course has tree-lined fairways, bentgrass greens and natural water hazards, and lies within an ecological corridor along the river with old River Red Gums. From the black tees it is a par 71 of 5958 metres with a slope of 135; the white tees play to 5302 metres. The 1st is a downhill 319-metre par 4 with fairway bunkers about 220 metres out and three greenside bunkers.
The club has won many pennant titles, has hosted the Boroondara Cup with neighbouring Kew Golf Club and the Yarra Courses Open, and has held an annual charity day since 1961.
Play is for members and their guests, and members of reciprocal clubs are welcome. Interstate and international golfers can ask for a tee time at set times by phoning the club or using the online enquiry form, with 48 hours' notice. Hire clubs, motorised carts and push buggies are available, and guests must follow the club dress code. The Golf Centre stocks equipment and has two Trackman simulator bays.
