About the course

Leongatha Golf Club sits on the Koonwarra-Inverloch Road at Leongatha South, about 17 kilometres south of Leongatha and 12 kilometres north of Inverloch. The club was formed in 1909 and opened its first course on the town's recreation reserve in May 1910, the ground now used by Woorayl Golf Course. With no room to grow to 18 holes there, the club bought 138 acres in March 1958 and opened the present course on 11 March 1961. A 25-acre block bought in 1982 holds a dam of about 10 acres that keeps the course watered through dry seasons.

The layout is the work of H. Vernon (Vern) Morcom, long-time superintendent at Kingston Heath, who drew it up in February 1956 and visited several times during construction between 1957 and 1960. The 18 holes cross country that ranges from hilly to gently rolling, with wide Santa Ana couch fairways framed by native bush and greens with subtle contours. The club notes it has been rated among Australia's top 100 public access courses.

  • 1st: a 370-metre par 4 from the back tee, with an uphill approach to an elevated green guarded by a bunker on the right and a swale on the left.
  • 18th: a 479-metre par 5 that doglegs right about 90 metres from the green, where long hitters can try to carry the mature gums and others lay up short of a front bunker.

Visitors are welcome all year, and bookings are encouraged by phoning the pro shop on 03 5664 3314 or through the club website. Green fees are $60 for 18 holes and $35 for nine, with a $35 twilight deal for unlimited golf after 4pm and weekday seniors rates outside peak periods. Motorised carts cost $55 for 18 holes and $32.50 for nine, and pull buggies $5. A 10 per cent surcharge applies on public holidays. Competitions run on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Practice facilities include a driving range with grass and synthetic hitting areas and a FlightScope indoor simulator, both open seven days during pro shop hours. Coaching is available, and the clubhouse has a bar, a main lounge and a meeting room used for functions.
