About the course
Wonthaggi Country Club was formed by the merger of two long-standing town clubs: The Wonthaggi Club, founded in 1911 during the town's coal-mining boom, and Wonthaggi Golf Club, which has played on its course in the heart of town since 1925. The combined club runs under one constitution and board, and plans a purpose-built clubhouse on the golf course site.
The 18-hole course covers 103 acres of undulating, tree-lined land and measures 5,766 to 5,863 metres depending on the tees, with a par of 71 and a course rating of 71. Fairways are generous and the hazards are mostly natural. The course is known for the kangaroos that live on it, and the club runs 30-minute guided kangaroo tours in an enclosed 4WD on weekends; at the time of writing new tour dates were listed as coming soon.
Social groups and travelling golfers are welcome. Green fees are $45 for 18 holes and $35 for nine on weekdays, and $50 for 18 holes and $30 for nine on weekends, with a $25 rate after 3pm; juniors under 14 play free with a paying adult. The club quotes cart hire as $20 to $35 in one place and $25 to $45 in another, so confirm the rate when booking. Pull buggies, motorised carts and clubs are all available for hire. Book a tee time by phoning the pro shop on (03) 5672 3697 or through the public booking system; groups of 20 or more can use the online group booking form.
The pro shop opens 7am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and 8am to 3pm on Sunday, and stocks clubs, balls, apparel and accessories. Practice facilities include a large putting green and a driving range, with range fees from $10 to $40. For food, the club's golf-side venue serves lunch and dinner Tuesday to Saturday with a lighter menu on Sunday and Monday, and its bistro serves lunch and dinner seven days.
