About the course
Maffra Golf Club is on Fulton Road on the edge of Maffra in central Gippsland. Golf in the town goes back to 1909 and a course called Hillside. The club re-formed at Mewburn Park in 1919 with nine holes and sand scrapes, reached 18 holes by 1928, and went into recess during both world wars. After a public meeting at the Maffra Mechanics Hall in 1950, it bought 132 acres in 1951 for £28/10/- and engaged the architect Mr Berriman to lay out an 18-hole course. The old Mewburn Park clubhouse was moved to the new site, then renovated in 1973 and again in 2019. Gavan Hackwill's history of the club, Out of the Rough, was published in 2001.
The course has 18 couch fairways and bent grass greens, and an automated irrigation system replaced the old hoses and sprinklers from 2023.
Visitors pay a $30 play-all-day green fee at the Vendi terminal in the starter's box, and under-18s play free with Keypass ID. Social golf can be booked at the bar or by phone on 03 5147 1884. Visitors with a GA handicap can enter the open competitions on Wednesday (men), Thursday (women) and Saturday (medley) for $25, and social play is available from 1pm on those days. Four electric carts and hire clubs are available. Dress is neat and tidy, and collared shirts are required for competition golf.
Practice facilities, open to members and green fee players, include a large putting green, a separate chipping and putting green, a driving range and a practice net, and there is a three-hole course for children. PGA professional Trevor Pridmore gives lessons. The licensed clubhouse has a bar and a kitchen for functions, and behind it sits an RV park with 21 powered sites, camping spots, showers, toilets and a barbecue area.
