About the course
Moonah Links is a golf resort at 55 Peter Thomson Drive, Fingal, on the Mornington Peninsula, with two 18-hole courses. The Open Course was designed by five-time British Open champion Peter Thomson, who called it his Leviathan, drawing on Scottish links such as St Andrews. It was the first course in Australia built specifically to host a national open, and staged the Australian Open in 2003 and 2005. The Moonah Classic followed from 2008 to 2010, and the Victorian PGA Championship has been played here since 2021.
The Open Course measures 6,783 metres at full length, although the championship tees are kept for major events and several tee options are available. Its natural undulations leave the wind a constant factor. The Legends Course, designed by Ross Perrett and opened in 2003, is 6,315 metres from the back tees and a little more forgiving, running through Moonah trees and native bush with Sandbelt-style bunkering. Each of its holes is named after a golfing great.
Public players register online before booking, or can book through the reservations team. Published rates are $140 for 18 holes from October to April and $125 from May to September, with 14 holes for $90 and twilight golf after 3pm for $85. Motorised carts and hire clubs are $60 each. The dress code requires collared shirts and soft spikes, with no denim, tracksuits or T-shirts, and BYO alcohol is not permitted on the property.
There is a driving range and practice putting green, plus a TrackMan simulator in the pro shop ($50 an hour for the public). The pro shop overlooks the 18th of the Open Course. The Spike Bar, with a terrace above the 18th, opens from 7am daily until 7pm Sunday to Thursday and 9pm on Friday and Saturday, and the resort also has Pebbles Restaurant and accommodation.
