About the course
Woodend Golf Club is a rural course in the Macedon Ranges, about 75 kilometres north of Melbourne, with views over the surrounding ranges, including Hanging Rock and Mount Macedon. Early members planted widely, and the course is now lined with mature spruce, cypress and oak alongside native gums and wattles, including the endangered Black Gum found around Woodend. Kangaroos, koalas, black wallabies and wedge-tailed eagles are often seen.
The men's course is par 67 over 4770 metres and the women's par 68 over 4571 metres. It is short by modern standards but hilly, with tight tree-lined fairways, sloping greens and very little sand or water. All 18 greens are grass and the fairways are fully watered, so it plays well all year. Slope ratings are 116 from the blue tees and 113 from the white.
- 5th: a 173-metre uphill par 3, rated the hardest hole, with trees left, a quarry right and out of bounds just over the back.
- 11th: the signature hole, a 164-metre par 3 played to a green about 65 metres below the tee, where wind decides the club.
- 13th to 15th: the club's "Amen Corner": a driveable 253-metre par 4, a 186-metre par 3 through a valley, and a 310-metre uphill dogleg left.
- 16th: a 414-metre par 5 that long hitters can reach in two by taking on the left side.
The course is open to all and dogs are welcome. Bookings through Teenet are encouraged, though rarely needed on weekdays; weekends and summer public holidays get busy. Saturday mornings are reserved for members until about noon, and members have the first tee early on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Green fees are $45 for 18 holes, and juniors pay $20 for 18 holes and $10 for nine. Carts are $40 for 18 holes and should be booked by text on 0436 602 422. Hire clubs and push buggies cost $10 for 18 holes or $5 for nine, by appointment. The clubhouse is available for functions.
