About the course
Orbost Golf Club is at 96 Bonang Road on the edge of Orbost in East Gippsland. It began in 1906 as the Snowy River Golf Club, playing on private land near the banks of the Snowy River. After several years, and a few floods, the club moved to its present site, which it first shared with the local race club and show society before buying the land outright once they had moved on.
The 18-hole course has changed little since that move. The main recent change was the removal of the pine plantations that once lined it, after their roots damaged machinery and the trees became a danger to staff and golfers. Course staff look after irrigation, mowing and bunker raking.
Visitors are welcome at modest green fees. The clubhouse opens on competition days, but meals are not served. Golfers travelling with caravans may park at the club while they play, provided they are self-contained, as there are no powered sites. Club competitions are held on Tuesday, which is ladies' day, Wednesday and Saturday.
The club hosts the Snowy River Golf Classic each January, a 36-hole stableford over the weekend with a nine-hole event on the Friday, which has run for more than 25 years. Other events include a fundraising golf day on Easter Saturday and weekend tournaments in August and November. The modern clubhouse can be hired for weddings and functions, and there is a practice tee.
