About the course
Tambo Valley Golf Club is a volunteer-run, non-profit club in Victoria's high country, about 15 kilometres north of Swifts Creek and 29 kilometres south of Omeo, reached by the signposted Bindi turnoff. The course sits below Mt Bindi between the Splitters Range and the Nunniong Plateau, beside Junction Creek, and kangaroos, fallow deer, emus and wombats are often about.
The layout dates from 1969. Swifts Creek policeman Bob Blackwood and storekeeper Les Skelton planned it from a hill above a pine plantation planted in the early 1960s on former dairy land, using labour and machinery borrowed from the local sawmill. The pines have since grown tall and changed how the holes play, and the course has come through the 2003 alpine fires and several floods.
There are nine holes, three each of par 3, 4 and 5, all with alternate tees for the second nine, making a par 72 of 5,224 metres for men and 4,810 metres for women. The fairways are narrow and the greens small, with a men's slope rating of 127. Greens are bentgrass and creeping red fescue, and distance markers sit at 50, 100 and 150 metres.
Visitors can buy all-day green fees, with prices shown on the clubhouse noticeboard; pay by Vendi card machine, EFTPOS when a committee member is present, or cash. Push buggies are free and hire clubs cost $5. The men's and women's medley competition is on Sundays from 11am (paused over winter), and the women's roster plays on Tuesdays from February to October.
The clubhouse, a converted farm cottage, has a licensed bar, kitchen and showers, and the old orchard beside it is now a camping ground with powered sites. Five-day tournaments are held over Australia Day and Easter.
