About the course
Cottesloe Golf Club was formed in 1908 as a nine-hole course on about 40 acres of seaside scrub in Cottesloe, the site now used by Sea View Golf Club, and held its opening day in September 1909. The original ground proved too small for championship golf, and the club planned a move in 1928, completing it in 1931 at its present coastal site in Swanbourne. Volunteers cleared the scrub and sandhills with a horse and plough to build the 18 holes.
The course has been reshaped several times. Thomson, Wolveridge and Perrott made major alterations in 1980 after the State Government reclaimed land on two boundaries, and in 1994 Graham Marsh, a former club champion, was appointed course architect to draw up a master plan. Members approved it in 1998 and work began with the aim of finishing before the club's 2008 centenary. The opening hole sets the tone: a 269-metre par 4 from the blue tees with out of bounds right and behind a multi-tiered, bunkered green, tempting long hitters to drive it.
The club has hosted the Australian Amateur, the Australian Junior Interstate Series and the WA Open, and in 1968 staged the Western Australian Ten Thousand, won by Peter Townsend. Its own Cottesloe Open is the second-oldest open event in the state.
Cottesloe is a private members' club and its course is not open to the public. Members of clubs with a reciprocal agreement may request a tee time within the club's set visitor playing times, and members may bring guests, who pay a green fee at the golf shop. Shirts need a fold-down collar or mock neck, shoes must have soft spikes, and multi-pocket cargo shorts are not permitted. The golf shop hires buggies, carts and clubs, and PGA and JLPGA coaches give lessons, including TrackMan studio sessions. The two-storey clubhouse looks west to the ocean and east to the city.
