About the course
Lake Karrinyup Country Club, about 15 minutes north of the Perth CBD, was incorporated in February 1928 after a committee led by Arnold Hodder, Dr Ralph Crisp and Keith Barker bought the 353-acre Careeniup property, lake included, in 1927. Barker brought Alex Russell, the 1924 Australian Open champion and design partner of Alister Mackenzie, to lay out the course.
The championship course hosted the Australian Open in 1952, 1960, 1968 and 1974, won by Norman von Nida, Bruce Devlin, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, as well as the Johnnie Walker Classic in 2002 and 2003, the Perth International in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016, and the World Super 6 Perth. Because the clubhouse sits high on a dune, several holes play steeply up or down hill. Fairways are wide, but Russell's strategic design rewards the correct side for each hole location, and the few fairway bunkers defend the best line. Michael Clayton Golf Design and OCCM revamped the course in 2007, and in 2017 and 2018 Michael Cocking upgraded the greens and bunkers. Fairways are couch and greens bent grass. The 9-hole North Course, about 1700 metres and par 31, mixes par 3s and short par 4s.
