About the course

The Western Australian Golf Club is a private club in Yokine, 8 kilometres from the Perth CBD. The story of its land starts in 1885, when Charles Pott and Richard Sherwood took up about 110 acres on the slopes of Mt Yokine. Richard Hesford bought the property in 1927 and transferred it to a company that set aside about 105 acres for golf and sold the rest as housing blocks, and the club was incorporated in 1928. During the Second World War, members too old to serve kept the course going, and four former club champions died on active service.

The 18-hole championship course is hilly and has hosted national and international professional events. A new irrigation system in 2000 added a lake between the 1st and 9th holes that also supplies the course. The Tudor-style clubhouse, last renovated in 2016, looks across the lake to the city skyline and the Darling Range, and the 12th tee is one of the highest points in the metropolitan area.

  • 6th: the longest hole, a 493-metre par 5 to an elevated two-tier green.
  • 9th: a 176-metre par 3 over the lake, with a route to the right for shorter hitters.
  • 12th: a 288-metre par 4 played downhill from the elevated tee, within reach for long hitters.
  • 16th: a 157-metre par 3 to a green ringed by bunkers.

Visitor access is limited. Western Australian residents who are not members can play only as the guest of a member, with bookings made through that member. Interstate and overseas visitors need a letter of introduction from their home club and book through the club's enquiry form; green fees are $220 for interstate visitors and $330 for international visitors. Members of reciprocal clubs get extra access to tee times and lower rates. Carts cost $40 for nine holes and $60 for 18, and Titleist club sets can be hired for $80.

The golf shop opens daily except Christmas Day and welcomes non-members, and PGA professional Michael Kunman's Perth Golf Centre operates on site.
