About the course

Rockingham Golf Club began on 28 July 1947, when 24 locals met at the Trocadero Tearoom to plan a course for the district. The first nine holes were bulldozed through the sand dunes with the Rockingham Hotel acting as clubhouse, and members later built an 18-hole Tom Howard layout largely by hand. On 9 March 1985 the club moved from Patterson Road and Read Street to its present site on Elanora Drive, about 45 minutes south of Perth, where Murray Dawson designed a new course through untouched bushland.

The course is fairly flat. The front nine has a links character, while the back nine is more heavily treed on richer soil. Grass trees and tall tuarts line the fairways and kangaroos are a common sight. From the blue tees the par 72 layout measures about 6,180 metres.

  • 4th: a 360-metre par 4 that doglegs left, where the wind decides the club off the tee.
  • 7th: the longest par 5 at 480 metres, dead straight with a wide fairway.
  • 8th: the longest par 3, 200 metres from an elevated tee.
  • 18th: a 405-metre par 4 finishing on a three-tiered green.

Rockingham is a private club that welcomes visitors on selected days. Visitors can phone ahead, or register online as a public member to book tee times. Weekday green fees are $40 for 18 holes and $30 for nine, weekend rates are $50 and $35, and twilight golf after 3pm is cheaper. Motorised carts cost $50 for 18 holes, and clubs with a pull buggy can be hired for $15. Dress rules apply. Club competitions run on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with nine-hole dawn-to-dusk events on Fridays, and corporate days are held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

There is a driving range, with buckets from $8. BnC Golf runs the pro shop, where PGA professionals Clarence Jayatilaka and Brenton Haines offer lessons, clinics, club fitting and repairs. The clubhouse bar opens from 10am daily and stays open later from Thursday to Saturday, and the clubhouse also has a restaurant.
