About the course
The golf course on Rottnest Island was the idea of Des Sullivan, the island manager from 1959 and a decorated wartime pilot. The Rottnest Island Board gave approval on 3 February 1960, and the course opened on 20 August 1961 as a public course with a private club inside it, with men and women admitted as equal members. Alternate tees came in 1970, and in 2013 the course was rebuilt with grass greens and irrigation using recycled grey water, in works overseen by former touring professional Bob Shearer's team.
Nine holes are played twice from different tees, with two flags on each green, to make up 18. The layout is changing in 2026. The Rottnest Island Authority closed the old 9th hole from 16 February 2026 to make way for essential infrastructure, and is remodelling holes 3, 6, 7 and 8 with new greens and a 1.5-metre quokka-proof fence, with works due to finish in November 2026. The course stays open throughout. The 2026 scorecard has a par of 68 over 18 holes and 5,000 metres from the men's tees, with the 427-metre 3rd the only par 5 on the front nine. Access has also moved: walkers leave the Kingsway bike path about 100 metres further north than before, and vehicles come in via Strue Road.
The RIGC Clubhouse runs the course and is open daily from 8am to 4pm. Green fees are $35 for nine holes and $48 for 18, or $16 and $32 for under-16s. Club hire costs $18, carts $45 for nine holes or $50 for 18, and pull trolleys $5. Bookings are recommended on 0456 916 198. It is an 18+ venue unless children are with a parent, and no outside alcohol is allowed. Rottnest Air Taxis sells a fly-and-play package combining return flights from Perth with nine holes.
The licensed clubhouse also offers barefoot lawn bowls, pool tables and big screens for sport, with live music on summer afternoons, and the Chippies fish and chip van trades in spring and summer.
