About the course
Royal Fremantle Golf Club was formed in 1905 and still plays on its original site, a reserve off High Street gazetted in 1899 and earlier leased for cattle grazing and used by the polo club. Founder Arthur Oliphant and Peter Anderson, a former British Amateur Champion and headmaster of Scotch College, laid out the first nine holes, which were playable by 1906. In 1909 Royal Fremantle became the first 18-hole club in Western Australia, in 1911 it hosted the first State Amateur Championship, and in 1930 it was granted the Royal prefix. Three holes were redesigned in 1968. Former juniors include Minjee Lee, Min Woo Lee and Greg Chalmers.
The course measures 6,175 metres with a slope rating of 130, and each hole is named after a figure from the club's past. The local wind known as the Doctor is a factor on several holes. - 2nd (Smith's Domain): a narrow par 5 where long hitters can carry the trees at the corner. - 11th (Clarke's Pines): a 499-metre par 5. - 15th (Ingram's Crest): the signature hole, a short par 4 with water to the right of the approach. - 16th (Rischbieth's Haul): rated the hardest, a 393-metre uphill par 4 that doglegs left between trees. - 17th (Butler's View): a par 3 to the smallest green on the course, with Indian Ocean views from the tee.
Royal Fremantle is a private members' club. Members of reciprocal clubs can request a tee time through the club's online booking form at least three days ahead, attaching a letter of introduction from their home club; visitor or competition fees depend on the reciprocal agreement, and the dress code applies.
The golf shop stocks equipment and apparel, sells driving range balls, has a repair workshop and hire equipment for visitors, and offers Trackman club fitting. PGA professionals give lessons Monday to Saturday, booked through the pro shop on (08) 9335 3866. The clubhouse has a bar and kitchen and function rooms overlooking the course.
