About the course
Royal Perth Golf Club was the State's first golf club. Its founders played socially on Burswood Island, formed the Perth Golf Club at a meeting in the Government House ballroom in August 1895, and held their first competition on 5 October 1895. Flooding and weeds moved the club to Grove Farm in Belmont in 1901, and on 22 August 1908 it opened its present links on reserve land in South Perth, beside the Swan River (Derbarl Yerrigan). The member-designed course grew from nine holes to a permanent 18 in 1928, and changes through the 1930s produced, by 1938, the layout played today. The Royal charter followed in 1937.
The club has hosted the 1949 Australian PGA Championship, the WA Open on numerous occasions, the Australian Senior Open from 2009 to 2012, and national men's and women's amateur championships, and has run the City of Perth Amateur since 1958.
Royal Perth is a private club. Interstate visitors ($175) and international visitors ($250) can play on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays with a letter of introduction or proof of club membership. Australian reciprocal members play free, subject to membership category and handicap, and international reciprocal members play free on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays and from 3:30pm on other weekdays. All bookings are requested in writing through the club's online form, no more than three months ahead. A small number of corporate golf days are held each year. Recognised golf attire is required on the course, and denim, cargo pants and running shoes are not permitted.
The golf shop and practice range are open daily from 6:30am to 5:30pm (from 8:30am on Mondays), with last range balls sold at 5pm. PGA professionals offer lessons, and the clubhouse hosts functions, meetings and weddings.
