About the course
Heidelberg Golf Club is at Lower Plenty, about 30 minutes from the Melbourne CBD. Its roots go back to the Eaglemont club of the late 1890s, which became Yarra Yarra Golf Club and played at Rosanna from 1911. When Yarra Yarra bought land on the sandbelt at East Bentleigh in 1927, local residents who wanted to keep golf in the northern suburbs formed a company and bought 177 acres of the old "Bryn Teg" estate for £13,000. Yarra Yarra's greenkeeper Harry Alexander began laying out the course in June 1927, and the first 12 holes were ready for play on 1 June 1928. The clubhouse is built around the heritage-listed 1880 Bryn Teg homestead and was restored in 1997.
The 18-hole par 72 course is hilly, with plenty of uphill and downhill shots and sloping, tiered greens.
- 4th: a 466-metre par 5 that climbs towards the clubhouse, with out of bounds left and a two-tiered green.
- 6th: the shortest hole at 110 metres, to a three-tiered green.
- 14th: the longest hole, a 565-metre par 5 that plays downhill.
- 17th: a 158-metre par 3 with water to the right and the biggest green on the course.
Public rounds are available on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for $89, prepaid online; Wednesday, Friday and weekends are for members only. Carts cost $55 and hire clubs $35, and a dress code applies. Corporate golf days run on Thursdays.
The club also has an eight-rink lawn bowls green, opened in 1958, and function rooms in the clubhouse. Junior MyGolf and Get Into Golf programs run during the year.
